- He was born in New York City and grew up outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- His father, Robert Swan Mueller II, worked for the DuPont Corporation in New York. His father had also served in the Second World War in the U.S. Navy. Robert Swan Mueller II died at the age of 91 on December 26, 2007, in Boston.
