• Sushil Chandra was appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on 12 April 2021. Earlier, Sushil Chandra was among the three-member bench of the Election Commission, and according to the tradition, the seniormost election commissioner is appointed as the CEC.

• Sushil Chandra has also done different pieces of training at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bengaluru.

• Sushil Chandra started working in Indian Revenue Services and served there for 38 years before joining the Election Commission of India as the Election Commissioner on 15 February 2019.

• Before joining the Election Commission, Sushil Chandra was the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the department that handles the implementation of direct taxes in India.

• Sushil Chandra along with Sunil Arora and Ashok Lavasa organized and successfully concluded the Lok Sabha election in 2019. Sushil Chandra was also responsible for conducting elections in the state of Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand in 2019. In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Bihar was the first state to contest elections in the state.

• Sushil Chandra’s term as the Chief Election Commissioner will end on 14 May 2022. Under his supervision, assembly elections will take place in the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur.

• In 2017, while working as the chairman of the CBDT, the department launched the operation ‘Operation Clean Money’ in a bid to clear the illegal wealth and black money. To promote transparency between India and Switzerland, Sushil Chandra signed treaties allowing an automatic exchange of information between countries.

• In 2019, Sushil Chandra’s brother-in-law, Arvind Goel was under the radar of the Uttar Pradesh government for buying and selling 200 acres of land in Moradabad using black money in a series of transactions between 2004 to 2017.
